Grim Creature In A Forest

I am a big fan of camping. I’ve been going on camping trips ever since I was a teenager. Back then, I used to go to camping spots within safe quarters. It was mostly with my elder siblings. However, later, I started going with my college buddies. And it was in mostly off-limits places. You know the places that are not listed or marked on the maps. As you might have guessed, these camping spots were generally deep in the woods. We would explore unknown places, set up a campfire, and camp under the stars while sipping liquor. It is a vibe. And it is usually fun until you realize that you aren’t alone in the woods.

I remember this one incident I would like to share with you all. It was back in 2016 when I was on a camping trip with my college friends. It was 5 of us. We had been on a few camping trips before. But this time, we decided to tread a little deep in the woods. You see, we wanted to feel the thrill. And our last two trips were a lot typical. It didn’t give us much satisfaction anymore. So we found a spot deep in the woods and set up a camp.

It didn’t feel much different than before, but knowing that we were camping miles away from the marked spots, gave us a sense of a rush. We followed our usual routine and started to hang around the perimeter. Soon, it got dark - we set up the campfire. It was all going well until we heard some noise from the trees. So we had placed our camp near a clearing. On one side was a clean green pasture, and on the other was the continuation of a thick, dense forest. Now, most of my friends were drunk. I was yet to feel tipsy. So my senses were sharp. And I think it is my nature, but I am always extra alert while camping. At first, I brushed it off as my imagination. But when I heard it for the second time, I knew it was coming for real. I walked a little close to the treeline to check if I could see any movement around it. But I couldn’t.

And I heard the noise again. I alerted my friends but they couldn’t grasp the gravity of the situation. They stopped blabbering loudly but were not bothered about what made that noise. It could be a bear, one suggested, and then started laughing. The rest joined in and giggled loudly. And then they stopped abruptly, as a loud gnarling roar shut them silent. Suddenly we all realized that we weren’t just seeing or hearing things. There was something along the treeline. And it was close. Very very close.

We got up from our seats and picked up our torch lights. We couldn’t see a thing from where we stood. Our flashes kept bouncing from one tree to the other. Somewhere we hoped we never get to see what was watching us from the shadows. It could have been a bear. Or it could have been a bobcat. Or something that I never believed ever existed. At that moment, I prayed that wendigos and skinwalkers weren’t real. I had heard many stories about them spotted in the deeper woods. But I had rubbished them as rumors and urban legends.

Unfortunately, our tents were set up very close to the treeline. And none of us dared to go even close to it. The creature’s roar was getting more hostile with each passing minute. And it made us panic more. We decided to pick up whatever was close and slowly started making our way out from the opposite side.

We kept walking toward the center of the plain, with our backs opposite it. None of us dared to turn around. Our flashes were still on. And one of my friends managed to light up a wooden stick with the campfire. Generally, animals are wary of fire. So it was a smart move. Although, I’m not sure if it would’ve helped if in case the creature had decided to attack us at any cost. A friend gasped as his torch landed on a tree. And next to the trunk, a pair of red eyes glowed with the light’s reflection.

He pointed in the direction where we could make out some ambiguous border near it. Most of it must have been a figment of our imagination. Also, not to forget that we were drinking just a few moments ago. Because it was impossible to see a red-eyed, tall man standing on four legs, I still can’t forget the visual. It was bone-chilling. We had to walk for another hour in the middle of the night to reach the trail. We heard some footsteps around us. But we kept moving at the same pace. Finally, we made it back to a safe spot.

And that day, we realized that there was a reason why some places are unmarked on the map. They are meant to be forbidden. Also, when I saw those blood-thirsty eyes, I could sense that we weren’t welcome there. I knew that if the creature wanted to devour us, it would’ve. But it didn’t. Why? That is a mystery. Maybe it wasn’t hungry. Maybe it was scared of a group or the fire. Or it just did not want us hanging around its home. My last theory is that we were just beyond his limits. He was probably somehow bound to his territory. And we were fortunate enough to have been camping just beyond it.

Ever since that incident, I have never camped in undisclosed locations. Also, I carry a gun whenever I am out camping. I don’t hunt. But I need it for my safety. And if you ever wish to go camping, I advise you to go to the camping spots designated by the forest department.
