Guardian Angel in disguise

As the ice melted off our roof, my husband and I planned to take a camping trip to the Death Valley National Park. Since childhood, I have been quite a paranormal activities enthusiast, so this would be a fun trip for me. Since it was an impromptu plan, my husband was a little nervous. So you know, my husband is a very cautious person. He usually needs time to pack all the essentials and salt. Now I do not believe in the salt theory, as it did fail once, and I was fallen unconscious for the next three days. Gladly, my husband Drake doesn’t know about this. And I decided to keep it a secret for our best interest.

So we reached our destination, and it was just us and our van in the middle of the forest. It was dark and cold. We pulled out the portable campfire that my husband insisted on buying on our way. In retrospect, it was a good decision. After setting up our tents near the lake, we snuggled inside a cozy blanket and listened to lo-fi music. We were vibing to the mood just when- we heard a wolf howling in the distance. Yes, we were scared, and so we ran inside the van. My husband took out his knife collection, just in case it gets around here. And at that moment, I regret forbidding him from buying and carrying a gun.

While we waited in the van, my curious self couldn’t resist. And so I opened the window to look around. Before I could adjust to the darkness outside, my eyes landed on it. There it was, a humongous hound-like creature, which, mind you, was not a wolf. It was huge as a baby dinosaur, with shiny blue eyes and dark brown fur. It was scary and beautiful at the same time. Our eyes met.

I couldn’t move as if he had hypnotized me. My husband pulled me inside and closed the window. The hound walked up to the van. As he approached the van, Drake pulled out a rifle and shot him on his toes. Yes, he secretly carried a gun, and I did not get upset with him. It let out a loud screeching cry. The hound was in pain. It howled loudly and ran back inside the forest, stomping on our tent and all the arrangements we had made. We stayed in the van for a while.

I couldn’t forget the hound’s eyes. It felt as if I had seen them before. Drake got out first to see if the area was clear, and then we arranged everything again. The portable campfire was a total bummer, I wanted to build a proper campfire, so I searched for some dry leaves and wood. Drake tagged along. Obviously, after what we had seen a few minutes ago, we were never going out alone in those woods.

We were picking wooden logs and dry leaves when we saw smoke from a distance. Thinking that some people like us were here got us psyched. We went there. But instead of another camping group, it was just a lady making food. Drake suggested we greet her and have a meal together as she was alone. So we went towards her. Seeing us, she waved both her hands. She was very welcoming! There was a treehouse behind her, and we assumed she probably lived in the forest. We had met some people like that before, so it was not a new thing for me.

She was cooking broth on the porch in a big pot. Did she know that we were about to visit her? Something felt fishy about that woman. I told Drake about it, but he laughed and said she wouldn't give us. I asked her why she lived in the forest. She said that she was abandoned by her parents and so has been living in the forest. We pitied her. I started helping her with the broth while Drake took care of the fire. While cleaning the table, I discovered that the complete house was encircled by chalk.

I tried to rub it, but it wouldn't go. The lady came to me and whispered in my ears, “I made it for you both. You are all mine now.” I knew it. I screamed in fear. I pulled Drake - something seemed off with him. He was sleepy. The broth. It had something in it. I grabbed Drake and tried to step out of the circle. But it grew as I took steps. The lady was a witch. She laughed out loud, looking at me trying to escape. I was scared, my husband was unconscious. I didn’t know what to do. I screamed and begged to let us go, but she wouldn’t. At that moment I heard something come from the trees. There it was, the hound. He came near us and kicked the pot that was the house of her power. The circle was gone, and I didn’t wait. I took Drake and ran as I could.

Somehow I got near the lake and got Drake conscious. But he was still a little dizzy. We drove back to the city at that very moment. Now I had memories flashing inside my brain, especially the salt incident. A couple years ago, I heard about missing-people incidents in the Death Valley National Park. So my friends and I decided to go on an expedition to find the cause behind the disappearances. At night, a friend of mine heard someone call out her name. It was the same witch. She followed the voice, and we followed her. Thinking of her as an ordinary human like us, we went to her and had a meal together. Yes, it was the same broth.

I was carrying my safety bag that had my tools. The friend whose name she had called fell unconscious first. That alerted us that she wasn’t an ordinary one. I took out the salt from my bag and spilled it on her but it didn’t affect her. And when she was about to attack us, the hound came to our rescue, and before I fell unconscious, our eyes met for the first time. I believe he was a protector in the woods, a guardian angel.
