Horror of the unidentifiable creature

A few weeks ago, I went for an evening walk through the woods nearby. The woods are close to where I live. It is generally quiet and peaceful, and apart from the typical few teenagers drinking and doing other teenager stuff, it was quite a chill place to be out for an evening stroll on a summer day. I am very familiar with these woods. I used to come and visit here a lot as a child, so I know there is nothing dangerous here. There is hardly any risk of an animal attack. Actually, in this forest, there are no animals larger than foxes that roam them, so the next part of the story gets weird.

As I walked through the forest trail, the sun began to set. It was roughly around 8 pm, and I began walking out of the forest in the same way I came in. It was then that I started to hear a very ear-piercing scream. It was shrill. It sounded sort of like a woman screaming in anger. It was so loud that I couldn't move for a moment. I looked around and could see nobody, nothing at all. I know foxes make some strange sounds, but I've heard fox screams since I was a child. And they were not even close to like what I heard just a while ago.

Upon hearing this, I started to walk out of the forest. I was shaken by what I had heard. However, as I walked out, I couldn't help but notice oddities in the tree line. For me, it was a usual picture. So my mind noticed some difference in the dark outline of one tree. It looked very much like a deer. Now, that is weird because this woodland hasn't had deer living in it for over 200 years. Yes, they were all hunted by the locals in the 1800s. But then I realized that it was not a deer. After seeing it repeatedly as I was walking, lurking in the tree line appeared to follow me - it looked as if it had human legs and was crouching whenever I saw it. It had bulky arms. It looked like it did not want me to get a good view of it, as whenever I would look at it for more than a few moments, it would very quickly dart into the woodland out of sight. But I could tell it was there until I reached the end of the forest. I could feel its eyes upon me. It kept on watching me. Upon getting to the end, I looked back again to see if it was there, but it wasn't. I was seemingly alone again once I left the forest. Now I am not sure if this could have been an actual wendigo. Or could I have been hallucinating? I thought that wendigos were spotted only in the deep woods and not near the outskirts of forests, where people like me go for a regular stroll.
